Description

"Battle of the Frogs"

On a 7x9 chessboard, the central 3x3 area is marked off as the "Arena". Each player sits at a long edge and starts with his nine frogs (hollow plastic figurines, 7 cm along their largest dimension) filling that row. All frogs move like Chess knights. Light moves first. Capture is by landing on an opposing frog and is not mandatory. The object of the game is to line up three frogs horizontally, vertically or diagonally in the Arena in such a way that the opponent cannot break it up (by capture) on his next move. A draw occurs when both players are down to two frogs.

In advanced play, a frog that captures gets to move again, sort of like in Checkers. Other variations allowed include different starting dispositions (any can be used as long as they are player-symmetrical). Finally, the "alternate win" rule states that you can also win by reducing the opponent to two frogs.
